Prevalence of non-carious cervical lesions and orthodontic treatment: a retrospective study

Abstract: Background This study aimed to assess the distribution of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) by tooth type, investigate the prevalence of NCCLs in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, and identify the possible associated factors. Material and methods A total of 160 patients were enrolled in this retrospective study. Data on the following variables were collected from pre-and post-orthodontic treatment records: age, sex, Angle’s malocclusion… Show more

“…For longitudinal analyses, 226 probands were available (Figure 1). Analysis of OW and NCCLs was performed on premolars and molars only, as substance loss appears mainly in lateral teeth 16 . OW was recognised as flat attritional wear facets due to friction between opposing teeth.…”

“…The dental structure's weakness is basically caused by malocclusion and occlusal interferences enhancing the stress concentration in the cervical area. This stress concentration is basically increased by numerous factors such as age, orthodontic movement type, root length, surgery time span, and severity of malocclusion, root length and bone loss amount [23]. Another study considered other variables such as gender, craniofacial pattern and the type of malocclusion that influences the NCCLs' prevalence [24].…”

“…It is currently incorrect to label a single mechanism as causing all types of NCCL. Thus, the current state in the field of study mentions a multifactorial etiology of NCCLs [1,[3][4][5][6][7][8]. Once tooth decay is ruled out as the origin of this condition, other factors involved must be recognized.…”
