BackgroundThere is currently limited information as to which conditions are most prevalent in communities in developing countries. This makes effective planning of eye services difficult.Methods3,899 eligible individuals were recruited and examined in a cross-sectional survey in Asa Local Government Area, Nigeria. Those who self-reported an ocular morbidity were also asked about their health-seeking behaviour. Health records of local facilities were reviewed to collect information on those presenting with ocular morbidities.Results25.2% (95% CI: 22.0–28.6) had an ocular morbidity in at least one eye. Leading causes were presbyopia and conditions affecting the lens and conjunctiva. The odds of having an ocular morbidity increased with age and lower educational attainment. 10.1% (7.7–13.0) self-reported ocular morbidity; 48.6% (40.4–56.8) of them reported seeking treatment. At the facility level, 344 patients presented with an ocular morbidity over one month, the most common conditions were red (26.3%) or itchy (20.8%) eyes.ConclusionOcular morbidities, including many non vision impairing conditions, were prevalent with a quarter of the population affected. The delivery of eye care services needs to be tailored in order to address this need and ensure delivery in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

Elderly population in India is rapidly on an increase due to increased life expectancy. Visual status is one of the most important health quality indicators for the elderly who are highly prone to develop various eye diseases which form a major health problem to them. So we have tried to study the pattern of ocular morbidity in this age group, to understand the risk factors responsible for blindness in the elderly so that we can focus on the preventive measures that we can adopt to avoid this. In our hospital bassed cross sectional study 500 patients above 50 years of age were taken. Detailed history based on pre-prepaired questionare was taken followed by complete ocular examination and relevant investigations to diagnose the ocular disease in these elderly people. We found that refractive errors followed by cataract were found to be the most common ocular problems in our sample population. Various risk factors like age, gender, residence, educational status, socio-economic status, hypertension, diabetes, cooking fuel used, smoking, alcoholism, and tobacco consumption were tabulated and there significance in causing ocular morbidity and blindness was studied. Finally we concluded that there is a high incidence of ocular morbidity in old age individuals most of the causes being either treatable or preventable. Therefore the focus should be on providing affordable quality eye care services at both the urban and rural areas so that we can prevent ocular morbity and blindness in these elderly individuals specially those with low educational and socioeconomic status.

Background: The cause of blindness and low vision differs in different countries and communities. The requirements of eye services also vary according to the need of the native population. Studies showing the pattern of ocular morbidity are needed to build better infrastructure of eye care facilities.Methods: This prospective study was conducted in eye department of Government Doon Medical College, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India between April 2016 to May 2016.the patients were seen in eye OPD by ophthalmologists. Proper anterior and posterior segment evaluation was done and patients were treated accordingly. Data including the registration number, name of the patient, age, sex and diagnosis were recorded in OPD register and analysed.Results: Total 1259 patients were examined. 605 were male and 654 were female. The mean age of male patients was 43 years and for females was 41.33 years. Refractive error (20.97%) was the commonest ocular morbidity in our study followed by cataract (20.02%), follow ups of cataract surgeries and allergic conjunctivitis. Besides refractive errors total 137 (10.88%) patients were presbyopic.Conclusions: This study shows a slightly exceeding number of female patients, which shows that females are equally aware of their health problems. Refractive errors are the most common cause in present study with cataract being second, may be because of higher mean age of the patients presenting to OPD. In present study allergic conjunctivitis was third commonest cause of ocular morbidity in our district may be due to windy weather. The leading causes of ocular morbidity in our study were refractive errors, cataract, allergic conjunctivitis and, presbyopia. The high prevalence of refractive errors and cataracts shows that hospital still requires an improved infrastructure with spectacle provision to the patients.

Abstract: The foundation of a comprehensive district eye care strategy in the light of VISION 2020 - the Right to Sight - remains an effective primary eye care service whose elements are treatment of NVIC, detection and referral of cataracts and refractive errors, and promotion of eye health.
