Prevalence of Periodontopathic Bacteria in Aggressive Periodontitis Patients in a Japanese Population

Abstract: T. forsythensis, C. rectus, P. gingivalis, and T. denticola were the predominant periodontopathic bacteria of aggressive periodontitis patients in Japan. Although A. actinomycetem- comitans was also detected in AgP patients, the prevalence of this bacterium was much lower than that of P. gingivalis.

“…were isolated frequently among patients with GAgP. In GAgP, the occurrence of identification of P. gingivalis varied between 62% and 100% in different populaces (Takeuchi et al, 2003;Gajardo et al, 2005). Comparably, this microorganism was the most frequently found (67.5%) in the currently studied population.…”

“…Examples include the observation of Streptococcus mutans, Actinomyces sp., and Lactobacillus sp. in caries (3,5,21,36), and that of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola in periodontitis (8,32,34). Taken together, these data suggest an alternative way to simplify microbiota compositional measurement, namely the characterization of a 'subset' bacterial profiles composed of a set of discriminating bacterial species.…”
