Prevalence of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (2010–2013): The first Croatian report

Abstract: Pneumocystis jirovecii is an important cause of interstitial pneumonia particularly among immunocompromised hosts. We analyzed the prevalence of P. jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected patients presented with interstitial pneumonia or acute respiratory syndrome hospitalized in six Croatian tertiary care hospitals. Over four-year period HIV-positive patients in Croatia, primarily those who do not know that they are HIV infected.

“…[1][2][3] Several studies have found that infection or colonization of Pneumocystis has an impact on the progression and prognosis of various respiratory diseases, such as chronic airway inflammation, pulmonary cystic fibrosis, and interstitial lung disease. [4][5][6] Morris et al found that the probability of pulmonary fibrosis and obstructive pulmonary disease was significantly higher in patients with PJP than in those without PJP. 3 Pneumocystis infection increases airway dilation and inflammation in the host, which is aggravated by persistent pneumocystis infection.…”

“…HIV is still an important cause of death across the world, [ 1 ] and Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) remains among the leading pulmonary opportunistic infections (OI) in several developing and developed countries [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. However, data of PcP incidence are scarce mainly in developing countries, and the largest studies of invasive fungal infections (IFI) seldom included PcP due to the difficulties related to its diagnosis [ 5 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”
