Prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity in very low birth weight infants

Abstract: ResumoObjetivo: determinar a prevalência da retinopatia da prematuridade (RP) em recém-nascidos de muito baixo peso (RN-MBP) (P<1500g).Métodos: Foram examinados prospectivamente 102 RN-MBP admitidos no BA M-HC (FMUSP), nascidos no período de 01 de janeiro de 1992 a 31 de dezembro de 1993.O mapeamento de retina, com depressão escleral, foi realizado inicialmente entre 3 e 8 semanas de vida pós-natal e repetido a cada 1 a 4 semanas, até que a vascularização da retina se completasse ou a RP se estabelecesse. “…These data show a lower BW and GA cohort of treated patients when compared to a similar data (1,369 ± 184 g and 30 ± 1.8 weeks) from a recent published article from Hanoi, Vietnam, a country in transitional economy, like Brazil (15) . Lower GA and BW have been implicated in the occurrence of ROP in most studies and both are considered the most important risk factors for severe ROP that require treatment in different populations and in different countries (16,17) . Our study did not show statistical differences regarding BW and GA in both groups (group 1: 918 g and 28 weeks versus group 2: 885 g and 28 weeks, P=0.654 and P=0.949, respectively) but it disclosed that inborn patients were treated for ROP during the 37 th week of PCA while referred patients were treated, usually, after the 39 th week of PCA, being this difference significant (P=0.029).…”
