Prevalence of Salmonella in Diverse Environmental Farm Samples

Abstract: The development of suitable intervention strategies to control Salmonella populations at the farm level requires reliable data on the occurrence and prevalence of the pathogen. Previous studies on Salmonella prevalence have focused on acquiring data from specific farm types and/or selected regions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution of this pathogen across a variety of farm types and regions in order to generate comparative data from a diverse group of environmental samples. Farm sample… Show more

“…Meteorological factors were identified in both the L. monocytogenes and Salmonella CTs, indicating that recent temperature and precipitation can influence food-borne pathogens in the environment, which is consistent with previous findings (19,62,67,78). L. monocytogenes was more frequently detected in cooler temperatures that were above freezing prior to sample collection in our study.…”

“…The recovery rates for Salmonella in this study were in agreement with findings from other field studies of dairy cattle (36). The sporadic nature of Salmonella shedding by cattle, which unfortunately made inferences about changes in resistance in Salmonella over time difficult, has also been found in other studies (15,42).…”
