Prevalence of solar damage and actinic keratosis in a Merseyside population

Abstract: This study examines the prevalence of sun-related damage to the skin in a caucasian population in north-west England. The importance of constitutional factors (complexion, skin type and age) as well as environmental and occupational exposures for the development of actinic keratosis (AK) and skin cancers was assessed in people over 40 years of age attending outpatient clinics (non-dermatology) at four centres in north-west England (Mersey region). “…In Europe, a prevalence of 15% in men and 6% in women has been documented [5]. Over the age of 70 years, 34% of men and 18% of women were found to have actinic keratotic lesions [6]. Next to fair skin type, an advanced age and lifelong sun exposure immunosuppression/-deficiency plays another important risk factor [5].…”

“…This rate amplified to 34.1 and 18.2% in men and women aged above 70 years [85]. The study set up to investigate the occurrence of AK was better in individuals with red hair and freckles, which indicates Fitzpatrick skin type I. There was a similar, but extra-marked, boost reported in Australia; prevalence rates of AK were 22 and 8% for men and women aged 30–39 years, which increased to 83 and 64%, respectively, in adults aged 60–69 years [86].…”
