Prevalence of tinea pedis in psoriasis, compared to atopic dermatitis and normal controls – a prospective study

Abstract: There are discrepancies in the literature regarding the prevalence of tinea pedis in psoriasis. The aim of this investigation was to conduct a cross-sectional study of the prevalence of tinea pedis in psoriasis compared to atopic dermatitis patients and normal controls. We enrolled 232 psoriatic patients, 190 atopic dermatitis patients and 202 normal controls, between the years 2010 and 2013. The prevalence of tinea pedis was 13.8% in psoriasis patients, not significantly different from that in atopic dermatit… Show more

“…In the patients with urticaria, onychomycosis and/or tinea pedis was also frequent (83.3% in G1 and 45.5% in G2) (Tables and ). These figures are higher than those of Leibovici et al ., who found a prevalence of 8.4% of tinea pedis in 190 AD patients and those of Svejgaard and Nilsson who diagnosed onychomycosis in only 4.9% of the AD patients. In both G1 and G2, superficial mycoses were found predominantly in those over 50 years old (Table ).…”

“…Leibovici et al concluyeron que las micosis de los pies son más frecuentes en pacientes con psoriasis y dermatitis atópica, en comparación con controles sanos, ya que el recam-bio epidérmico acelerado altera la función de barrera de la piel, lo cual favorece la infección por patógenos externos 15 . Asimismo, las fisuras permiten que los hongos penetren fácilmente el estrato córneo 1,16 .…”

“…7 Whether psoriasis itself is a risk factor for tinea is still under debate, but tinea pedum and onychomycosis seem to have higher prevalence among psoriatic patients. 8,9 As in this patient, bacterial overgrowth of hyperkeratotic nail samples can confound the culture's clinical significance, thereby hindering the diagnosis of onychomycosis in patients with psoriasis. 10 Alteras et al 8 hypothesized that autoinoculation from preexisting onychomycosis or tinea pedum was the underlying mechanism of tinea incognito.…”
