Prevalence of upper airway obstruction in patients with apparently asymptomatic euthyroid multi nodular goitre

Abstract: Aims:To study the prevalence of upper airway obstruction (UAO) in “apparently asymptomatic” patients with euthyroid multinodular goitre (MNG) and find correlation between clinical features, UAO on pulmonary function test (PFT) and tracheal narrowing on computerised tomography (CT).Materials and Methods:Consecutive patients with apparently asymptomatic euthyroid MNG attending thyroid clinic in a tertiary centre underwent clinical examination to elicit features of UAO, PFT, and CT of neck and chest.Statistical A… Show more

“…They also demonstrate that the presence of upper airway obstruction on pulmonary function test in the evaluated patients did not correlate with the tracheal reduction detected in the CT scan. 10 Recognition of these cases is important, as they constitute a preventable cause of mortality if timely diagnosed and treated.…”

“…[11] We would have been unable to assist spontaneous breathing and providing a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which is often vital in an obstructing airway. [12] In absence any oral space, laryngeal mask airway was also not possible. Thus, we resorted to use of a conduit in form of nasopharyngeal airway bypassing the obstructive segment of airway [Figure 3].…”
