Prevalence of Vibrio alginolyticus in Sediment Samples of River and Coastal Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract: Vibrio alginolyticus has been thought to be a halophilic marine bacterium that causes diarrhea, otitis media and wound infection through the consumption of raw or inappropriately cooked sea food. It is one of the main Vibrio pathogens affecting marine animals, such as marine fish, shrimp and shellfish which lead to large economic damage. Although there are reports on the presence of this organism in the coastal area of other countries, not so much work has been done on the isolation and characterization of thi… Show more

“…Vibrio alginolyticus , a Gram-negative halophilic bacterium with worldwide distribution, is an opportunistic pathogen of marine animals and humans, which causes serious infections, such as otitis media, otitis externa, and gastroenteritis ( Citil et al, 2015 ; Siddiqui et al, 2016 ). During invasion, pathogenic bacteria may be exposed to a variety of harsh environments, including high pH, high salinity, and starvation ( Ulitzur, 1975 ; Roop et al, 2009 ).…”

“…Vibrio alginolyticus is a Gramnegative halophilic bacterium that is ubiquitous in marine and estuarine environments. It is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for vibrioses in fish and shellfish and causes skin and ear infections in humans (16,17).…”

“…Vibrio alginolyticus is a Gram-negative, motile, nonsporing, curved rod-shaped bacterium associated with the family of Vibrionaceae of Gamma-proteobacteria. Previously, based on similar genotypic characteristics, V. alginolyticus was considered a biotype of V. parahemolyticus (Siddiqui et al, 2012). However, these two species can be differentiated based on the fermentation of sucrose carried out by V. alginolyticus.…”
