Prevalence Trend and Disparities in Rheumatoid Arthritis among US Adults, 2005–2018

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) trends among US adults and disparities in RA patients in recent years have not been well described. We aimed to examine the trend of RA prevalence and disparities among US adults. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of the years 2005–2018 were analyzed to examine the self-reported RA prevalence trend. Age-adjusted RA prevalence stratified by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES), as well as associated linear trends, were calculated for both … Show more

“…The prevalence of RA is relatively constant, accounting for approximately 1% of the world population. 37 RA is characterized by systemic inflammation and persistent synovitis, leading to serious complications in many other tissues as well. GWASs and transcriptomic studies have significantly improved the understanding of RA pathogenesis.…”

“…In 2013, Arkema et al 68 found that persons with the lowest category of UVB exposure compared to the highest category of UVB exposure had 37% increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis. The incidence of rheumatoid arthritis in Black American men is 50% higher than in White American men, and is 160% higher in Black American women than in White American women 69 .…”

“…Serum 25(OH)D levels of less than 30 ng/mL have been associated with all-cause mortality 47 and increased risk of colorectal cancer 50 , stomach cancer 52 , LRTI 59 , SIDS 69 and preterm birth 78 , indicating that all persons should have serum 25(OH)D levels of at least 30 ng/mL. Levels higher than 30 ng/mL may be beneficial, since as noted above persons still living traditional pastoral lives outdoors have levels of 46 ng/mL 45 .…”

“…Smoking status was categorized as current smoker (who has smoked 100 cigarettes in lifetime and currently smokes cigarettes), former smoker (who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in lifetime but had quit smoking at the time of interview), and never smoker (who has never smoked or has smoked less than 100 cigarettes in lifetime) ( 33 ). Participants were also divided into three income statuses, low (PIR < 1.3), moderate (1.3 ≤ PIR < 3.5), and high (PIR ≥ 3.5), by dividing family income by a poverty threshold specific to household size and survey year, where lower PIR indicates greater poverty ( 34 , 35 ). The total amount of physical activity was calculated by multiplying the number of minutes of activity per week (min/wk) by the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) of each activity, and was graded as high (MET⋅min/wk ≥ 600) and low (MET⋅min/wk < 600) ( 36 ).…”
