Show more

“…The cities in which positive animals were found are listed in Figure 1. The findings of this study are in agreement with those of Carletti et al (2005), who showed 2.6% of positive animals among 395 animals evaluated from 13 slaughterhouses from various regions of Paraná. The authors also suggested decreased tendency of the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in this species due to the technological improvement of farms, with a lower prevalence among finishing animals, suggesting that the reduced length of stay of these animals on the farm has decreased the likelihood of infection by T. gondii.…”

“…The serological titers found in the pigs (Table 1) suggest that chronic infection was present, and these observations were similar to those of Carletti et al (2005). The lack of statistically significant difference (c 2 = 1.01; p Yates = 0.31) in occurrences of infection due to T. gondii in relation to sex (Table 2) was also observed by Souza (1995), since both genders were exposed to the same risk factors.…”

“…After a free and informed consent statement was signed by the individuals with technical responsibility for the slaughterhouses, 459 blood samples were collected from cattle and 406 from pigs, and these were sent to the Toxoplasmosis Laboratory of IOC/Fiocruz for storage at -20 °C. For the IFAT, the samples underwent serial fourfold dilutions down to 1:4096, and samples with titers ≥ 64 were considered positive in cattle (DAGUER et al, 2004) and in pigs (CARLETTI et al, 2005).…”

“…It was also not significant in the study carried out by Avelino et al (2004). These contradictory results could be explained by the drastic reduction of the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in the swine population in the Northern region of PR, one of the most important species in the transmission of toxoplasmosis to the human population in Brazil (Vidotto et al 1990, Tsutsui et al 2003, Olbrich-Neto & Meira 2004, Carletti et al 2005, Dias et al 2005. This reduction likely occurred as a result of increased technology and sanitary improvements adopted on swine farms over the last 15 years.…”
