Prevalência de disfagia em pacientes com esclerose múltipla através da fibroendoscopia da deglutição (FEES)

Abstract

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a disease characterized by episodes of demyelination of the CNS, causing very variable symptoms, being frequent the change in swallowing in this population. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of dysphagia and to determine whether, through FEES, it can be early, with intermediate levels of functionality, to diagnose moderate degree of dysphagia. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2016 and October 2017, with 76 patients, diagnosed with MS. Patients were excluded from other health facilities, outside the study period, without clinical conditions, with other diseases associated or who did not agree to participate in the study. Results: Moderate dysphagia was diagnosed in 22.4% of the patients, and some of these patients had an intermediate level of functionality (EDSS 4.0-5.5). CONCLUSION: FEES has been shown to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis of moderate dysphagia, and should be considered early, even in patients with no major alterations in its functionality, and may help prevent serious repercussions resulting from swallowing disorders.
