Prevalência de manifestações clínico-laboratoriais e comorbidades na polimiosite segundo o gênero

Abstract: Objective: To assess gender distribution in polymyositis (PM) and its infl uence on disease, regarding clinical and laboratory manifestations, outcome and comorbidities. Methods: Retrospective single-center cohort study assessing 75 consecutive patients with PM ) from 1990 to 2010. Complementary tests were related to early diagnosis of PM. Results: The study assessed 52 women and 23 men (ratio 2.3:1), most of whom white (84.0%), with a mean age of 42.7 ± 13.7 years (16 to 67 years), and mean disease duration o… Show more

“…In this retrospective cohort study, 40 of 245 female (16.3%) patients with IIMs develop hypertension, and 14 of 117 male (12.0%) patients with IIMs develop hypertension. Although patients with IIMs occur mostly in females, gender has no significant difference among IIMs patients with and without hypertension ( P = .442), which is consistent with the study by Souza et al 8 Notably, although the baseline of SBP has differences in IIMs patients, the present study finds no statistical significance among “systolic BP (per 10 mmHg)” in the multivariable regression model ( P = .203), which is not in line with the results of the previous studies 12,13 . It may be related to the type of the current study and the relatively small sample size.…”

“…6 In addition, the reported prevalence of hypertension in patients with IIMs varies between 38.7% and 71%, based on different patient selection and the definition of the disease, which is also higher than the general population. 5,7,8…”

“…pointed out that diabetes mellitus was positively associated with mortality in patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis (HR=2.57, 95%CI: 1.38-4.80, P < 0.0001) ( 9 ). In addition, patients with diabetes mellitus not only reduce the quality of life but also may lead to serious complications that increase medical expenses ( 14 , 15 ). Therefore, it was crucial to predict the risk of developing diabetes mellitus in IIMs patients and then take preventive measures early for high-risk cases, and ultimately reduce the adverse cardiovascular prognosis.…”
