“…This finding does not necessarily suggest that we should prioritize the use of oro‐nasal over nasal masks but rather reflects recommended practices with close monitoring and early identification of mask‐related side effects, 2,8 particularly when an oro‐nasal mask is used, which is the case in our programs. Other factors previously reported in the literature such as prematurity, age under 2 years, and craniofacial abnormalities were not found predictive, 17,19 suggesting that the underlying clinical characteristics are less relevant than adequate mask fitting and early interventions to address skin injury. In our program, we provide early interventions to ensure ongoing mask fitting and headgear adaptation as the child grows, monitor appropriate humidity levels and provide ongoing parental education for adequate mask/headgear placement and mask care.…”

“…Skin injury, ranging from persistent redness to skin breakdown, is a frequently reported NIV complication in children 1,15 and the most reported complication in our study at both visits. Excessive pressure, friction, temperature and humidity are believed to contribute to skin injury 16–18 . Interestingly, the rate of skin injury dramatically decreased after the initial follow‐up visit, suggesting that appropriate mask fitting and early detection and correction of the cause for skin injury are effective strategies.…”
