Preventing Drift through Continued Co-Design with a First Nations Community: Refining the Prototype of a Tiered FASD Assessment

Abstract: As part of the broader Yapatjarrathati project, 47 remote health providers and community members attended a two-day workshop presenting a prototype of a culturally-safe, tiered neurodevelopmental assessment that can identify fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in primary healthcare. The workshop provided a forum for broad community feedback on the tiered assessment process, which was initially co-designed with a smaller number of key First Nations community stakeholders. “…FASD in First Nations populations was discussed as a direct consequence of colonization, intergenerational trauma, and ongoing systemic racism (Flannigan, Tremblay, et al, 2022; Gonzales et al, 2018; Miller et al, 2022). There can be a level of shame associated with FASD for individuals and families (Hamilton et al, 2019; Hamilton, Maslen, Best, et al, 2020) but it was discussed how shame was not a barrier for individuals when a culturally safe space is provided.…”

“…This research aims to establish the accuracy and cost-efficiency of rapid, culturally-responsive screening and assessment tools, which are part of a co-designed, tiered neurodevelopmental assessment process for diagnosing FASD in primary healthcare 17 22–24. Diagnosing children with FASD in primary healthcare will lessen the burden on specialist systems and help to place developmentally and socially/emotionally vulnerable children on support trajectories earlier.…”
