Preventing premature deaths from breast and cervical cancer among underserved women in the United States: insights gained from a national cancer screening program

Abstract: This commentary highlights some of the valuable insights gained from a special collection of papers that utilized data from the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) and appear in this special issue. The data and experiences of the NBCCEDP can inform the identification of new opportunities and directions for meeting the cancer screening needs of underserved women in a complex and changing health care environment.

“…Cervical cancer screening programs have led to a sustained decline in cervical cancer incidence and mortality in developed countries and prevented premature deaths in underserved populations [3, 4]. This is attributable in part to early detection of invasive cervical cancer, thereby improving survival following treatment [5].…”

“…The final article highlights these valuable insights and discusses future opportunities for the NBCCEDP [17]. As the only nationally organized cancer screening program in the USA, the NBCCEDP provides a model to guide future efforts in improving the provision of preventive health services and understanding the impact of these services on reducing breast and cervical cancer mortality among all women in the USA.…”
