Prevention by Estrogen of the Decidual Alkaline Phosphatase Response in Intact and Ovariectomized Pseudopregnant Rats

Abstract: In intact rats, or in rats castrated on day 4 and receiving progesterone replacement, the decidual alkaline phosphatase activity was 12 times greater on day 8 of pseudopregnancy than in the contralateral nontraumatized horn ( 1-3). This pseudopregnant decidual enzyme response was entirely similar to the alkaline phosphatase reaction in day 8 implantation sites of pregnant rats (1, 3-6). No increased enzyme was elicited by the nondecidualized uteri of nontraumatized, pseudopregnant animals treated with 17p-estr… Show more

“…Intact rats (day 4) show a 10-to 15-fold rise of alkaline phosphatase activity in traumatized uteri on the 8th day of pseudopregnancy (Manning et al 1969 , b, d;1970). That this enzyme response of the rat uterus derives from the decidual tissue only (and thus from endometrium) has been demonstrated conclusively by Lobel, Tic & Shelesnyak (1965).…”

“…Thus, in intact rats or animals ovariectomized on day 1 or 4 and receiving progesterone re¬ placement, the alkaline phosphatase was 12 times greater in decidualized tissue on day 8 of pseudopregnancy than in contralateral non-traumatized horns (Manning, Carter & Butler, 1969a;Manning, Carter, Calenti & Anderson, 19696;Manning, Steinetz & Giannina, 1969d;Manning, Calenti & Carter, 1970). Additionally, no rise in enzyme activity was observed in non-decidualized uteri of non-traumatized, pseudopregnant animals treated with oestradiol-17/?…”
