Prevention of Mutation, Cancer, and Other Age‐Associated Diseases by Optimizing Micronutrient Intake

Abstract: I review three of our research efforts which suggest that optimizing micronutrient intake will in turn optimize metabolism, resulting in decreased DNA damage and less cancer as well as other degenerative diseases of aging. (1) Research on delay of the mitochondrial decay of aging, including release of mutagenic oxidants, by supplementing rats with lipoic acid and acetyl carnitine. (2) The triage theory, which posits that modest micronutrient deficiencies (common in much of the population) accelerate molecular … Show more

“…The diet containing this combination is here referred to as the Beaver Dam diet. We tested the combination of α-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine and biotin reported to optimize metabolism; delay mitochondrial decay; and decrease DNA damage, cancer, and other degenerative diseases of aging in rats (Ames 2004;Ames 2010). This combination is sold under the trade name Juvenon, and we here refer to the diet containing this supplement as the Juvenon diet.…”

“…Several methods were proposed to prevent mitochondrial dysfunction and improve mitochondrial metabolism. These methods rely on the development of pharmaceutical [17] or nutriceutical agents [18]. …”

“…It has been estimated that the most of human cancer cases are due to environmental factors and would be preventable if the main risks could be identified (9,10). The role of diet is important and a number of studies have suggested that absence of certain dietary compounds, notably antioxidants, contribute to increasing the risk of malignancy (11)(12)(13)(14). There has been much interest in vitamin E, a biologically active phenol.…”
