Preventive effect of dietary astaxanthin on UVA-induced skin photoaging in hairless mice

Abstract: Astaxanthin, a carotenoid found mainly in seafood, has potential clinical applications due to its antioxidant activity. In this study, we evaluated the effect of dietary astaxanthin derived from Haematococcus pluvialis on skin photoaging in UVA-irradiated hairless mice by assessing various parameters of photoaging. After chronic ultraviolet A (UVA) exposure, a significant increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and wrinkle formation in the dorsal skin caused by UVA was observed, and dietary astaxanthin si… Show more

“…12,13 AST also affects ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation as well as desquamation of the epidermis and the extracellular matrix of the dermis. 14 In addition, it improves heart function 15 by increasing the production of antibodies and T-cells, inflammation and age-related macular degeneration.…”

“…Dietary AST reduced features of chronic UVA exposure such as TEWL and wrinkle formation in female hairless mice. AST treatment also reduced the mRNA level of epidermal (lympho-epithelial Kazal-type related inhibitor, steroid sulfatase and aquaporin 3) and dermal (MMP-13) markers increased by chronic UVA irradiation 201 .…”

“…Although UVC is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer, UVA and UVB penetrate the ozone layer and can cause skin injury. UVA penetrates the dermis, causing wrinkles and loss of elasticity through degradation of the extracellular matrix . Although UVB primarily affects the epidermis and barely reaches the dermis, it is more energetic than UVA and induces DNA damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation of the skin, resulting in various harmful effects, such as dryness, wrinkles, erythema, and pigmentation .…”
