Preventive efficacy of hydroalcoholic extract of Cymbopogon citratus against radiation-induced DNA damage on V79 cells and free radical scavenging ability against radicals generated in vitro

Abstract: This study presents the findings of free radical scavenging and antigenotoxic effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Cymbopogon citratus (CCE). The CCE at a concentration of 60 μg/mL resulted in a significant scavenging ability of 2,2-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH; (85%), 2,2-azinobis (3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS; 77%), hydroxyl (70%), superoxide (76%), nitric oxide (78%) free radicals generated using in vitro and also a moderate anti-lipid peroxidative effect (57%). Further, the r… Show more

“…Furthermore, lemongrass ethanolic extract or its isolated compounds (e.g. citral and β ‐myrcene) have shown antioxidant and antigenotoxic/antimutagenic activities against different mutagens (Kauderer et al ., 1991; Gomes‐Carneiro et al ., 1998; Zamith et al ., 1993; Vinitketkumnuen et al ., 1994; Melo et al ., 2001; Rabbani et al ., 2006; Rao et al ., 2009). In chemopreventive studies, blocking agents are defined as inhibitors of tumor initiation acting by different mechanisms including ROS scavenging, changes in phase I and II enzymes of carcinogen metabolism and further DNA damage (Stoner et al ., 1997).…”

“…The cells were grown in DMEM supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated FBS, 1% penicillin/streptomycin solution (10.000 units of penicillin and 10 mg of streptomycin in 0.9% NaCl), and 2 mM L-glutamin at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO 2 . 39 The culture medium was changed every 3 to 4 days. The passage numbers used in our study were between 6 and 10.…”

“…It is widely used as an essential ingredient in Asian cuisines because of its sharp lemon flavor. Lemongrass has high antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of Cymbopogon citratus was established (Rao et al, 2009). Lemongrass extracts (by direct boiling and distillate) have been successfully utilized in yoghurt manufacture at 4 levels (1%, 2%, 3% and 4%) with optimum level of 2% (Sutariya and Rao, 2015).…”
