Preventive role of genistein in an experimental non‐alcoholic steatohepatitis model

Abstract: Genistein, a strong antioxidant agent, significantly decreased the plasma TNF-alpha level and remarkably prevented the emergence of NASH by improving the biochemical and histopathological abnormalities via attenuating oxidative stress.

“…They also suggested that isoflavone supplementation in broilers may be needed to protect tissues against attack by lipid oxidation products. In addition, in response to genistein supplementation, liver and serum MDA levels decreased in quails (Onderci et al, 2004) and in rats (Yalniz et al, 2007).…”

“…Wei et al (50) reported that genistein strongly inhibited formation of reactive oxygen species and thus cell-derived hydrogen peroxide formation in vivo. Yalniz et al (51) reported that dietary genistein supplementation decreased plasma and liver MDA concentrations in rats. Similar to our results, about 20% decrease in plasma 8-isoprostane levels was detected when textured soy protein containing 56 mg soy isoflavones was consumed daily for 2 wk by healthy volunteers (52).…”

“…Small, mostly animal, studies suggest it has antioxidant properties and can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce hepatic fat content (101). Genistein, a soy isoflavone, has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in insulin resistant animal models and improved oxidative stress in animals with NASH (102)(103)(104). Studies in human beings have not been published and, thus, nutritional supplementation with genistein cannot be recommended.…”
