“…This result was also reported in an ecologic study of cancer mortality rates in Spain [48]. However, another case control study from Sweden [49] showed divergent result, the cases with the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma in skin had an increased risk of getting another form of cancer, and had no correlation with gastric cancer (OR 1.00, 95%CI 0.85-1.17). One limitation of this study is the exposure factor bias, whereby the study completely neglects the factor of sun exposure to patients, which may lead to this contradiction.…”

“…This study offers further evidence that diagnosis of NMSC in Nordic countries is associated with increased risk of internal cancers 14 , 15 . In this study, both melanoma and NMSC are inversely correlated with the UVB index, although the link is not statistically significant for NMSC for females.…”

“…However, in less sunny countries (Canada and seven northern European countries), all solid tumors except those of the lip and skin were significantly directly correlated with NMSC diagnosis 14 . A recent paper from Sweden found an increased risk of internal cancers for those diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) 15 . However, studies in The Netherlands found inverse correlations between NMSC and prostate 16 and colorectal 17 cancer.…”

“…This provided a direct test of the vitamin D hypothesis. The results showed that the risk of internal malignancies was elevated in the interval prior to a BCC diagnosis in patients who eventually were diagnosed with a BCC, providing further evidence that NMSC is a marker of a cancer-prone phenotype (44). …”

“…Lindelof and colleagues (44) directly addressed the two competing hypotheses. Patients with a diagnosed BCC may be more likely to engage in sun-protection behaviors, so this study examined the risk of other cancers in the time window before the BCC diagnosis when sun exposure, and thus cutaneous vitamin D synthesis, was likely to be highest.…”
