From virtual reality and telepresence, to augmented reality, holoportation, and remotely controlled robotics, these future network applications promise an unprecedented development for society, economics and culture by revolutionizing the way we live, learn, work and play. In order to deploy such futuristic applications and to cater to their performance requirements, recent trends stressed the need for the "Tactile Internet", an Internet that, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), combines ultra low latency with extremely high availability, reliability and security [1]. Unfortunately, todays Internet falls short when it comes to providing such stringent requirements due to several fundamental limitations in the design of the current network architecture and communication protocols. This brings the need to rethink the network architecture and protocols, and efficiently harness recent technological advances in terms of virtualization and network softwarization to design the Tactile Internet of the future.In this paper, we start by analyzing the characteristics and requirements of future networking applications. We then highlight the limitations of the traditional network architecture and protocols and their inability to cater to these requirements. Afterward, we put forward a novel network architecture adapted to the Tactile Internet called FlexNGIA, a Flexible Next-Generation Internet Architecture 1 . We then describe some use-cases where we discuss the potential mechanisms and control loops that could be offered by FlexNGIA in order to ensure the required performance and reliability guarantees for future applications. Finally, we identify the key research challenges to further develop FlexNGIA towards a full-fledged architecture for the future Tactile Internet.

A Theoretical Model for Analysis of Firewalls Under Bursty Traffic Flows

Firewalls are located at the front line of the network against outside threats. Performance modeling and analysis of network firewalls help to better understand their behavior and characteristics. Moreover, having an analytical model in hand helps firewall designers avoid developing multiple design alternatives and thus considerably reduce the design costs. Moreover, the network administrators can proactively identify the performance bottlenecks of the network and fix them before any malicious attack which targets the network or the firewall itself. In this paper, we propose a novel analytical approach for performance modeling and analysis of network firewalls based on a discrete-time queuing system in which the bursty nature of the incoming traffic is taken into account, where traditional queuing models such as M /M /1 model fails to capture peculiar characteristics of the Internet traffic. Throughput, packet loss, delay, and firewalls CPU utilization are employed as performance evaluation indicators in our proposed model. In addition, we introduce a potential DoS attack with a very low rate which can be launched against firewalls with different burstiness factors.INDEX TERMS Network firewalls, performance modeling, discrete-time queuing system, three dimensional Markov chain, burstiness factor, DoS attack.

З врахуванням величезного зростання мобільного трафіку даних, з одного боку, та помірного середнього доходу на кожного користувача, з іншого боку, оператори мобільного зв'язку вивчають технології мережевої віртуалізації та технології хмарних обчислень для побудови економічно ефективних та еластичних мобільних мереж та їх пропонування як хмарних сервісів. Предметом вивчення в статті є процеси конфігурування телекомунікаційної мережі для вирішення завдань обробки службового навантаження. Метою є підвищення ефективності роботи мережі шляхом здійснення реконфігурації топології. Завдання: розробити математичну модель та відповідну процедуру еконфігурації ресурсів телекомунікаційної мережі при перевантаженнях або відмовах. Використовуваними методами є: графовий підхід та математичні моделі оптимізації для задачі перерозташування мережевих функцій, імітаційне моделювання для дослідження роботи запропонованого методу реконфігурації ресурсів в мережах з віртуалізацією. Отримані такі результати. У статті представлено метод локальної реконфігурації обчислювальних ресурсів віртуальної мережі у випадку відмови або перевантаження. Висновки. Отриманий метод враховує динамічну зміну топології мережі обслуговування та на відміну від існуючих дозволяє гнучко визначати конфігурацію обчислювальних ресурсів обслуговування, розміщати мережеві функції з мінімальними витратами та децентралізовано контролювати показники якості. Метод використовує евристичну модель для визначення оптимального місця міграції віртуалізованих мережевих функцій з фізичного вузла з відмовою або перевантаженням, а результати моделювання у системі Mathcad показують підвищення ефективності використання ресурсів. Проведені дослідження показали доцільність використання запропонованих рішень при вдосконаленні існуючих телекомунікаційних мереж та при побудові нових перспективних гнучких добре масштабованих мереж оператора зв’язку із повним або частковим застосуванням принципу віртуалізації мережевих функцій.
