Price Premiums for Providing Eco‐labelled Seafood: Evidence from MSC‐certified Cod in Sweden

Abstract: Eco-labelled seafood is an important tool to promote sustainable development in fisheries. A price premium on eco-labelled seafood signals a return on investment in sustainable fishing methods, providing an incentive for fishers to adopt such methods. This paper investigates whether Swedish fishermen gained a price premium from participating in the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified Swedish Eastern Baltic cod fishery in the period 2011-2012. Using a detailed dataset of landing tickets and log books, we… Show more

“…In turn, higher demand by consumers represents an incentive for producers, who will benefit from higher prices or the creation of new markets . It follows that consumer awareness about the issue addressed by the eco-label is crucial for determining the success of eco-labelled fish products (Johnston et al 2001;Blomquist et al 2014;Kaiser and EdwardsJones 2006).…”

“…While a price premium has occurred in some cases (Roheim et al 2011, SognGrundvåg et al 2013, Blomquist et al 2014, in others this premium has not been realized (Wakamatsu 2014, Asche et al 2015. Proponents, however, argue that an eco-label on seafood should be considered chiefly as a "market guarantee," even in difficult times for trade, as the demand for eco-labelled fishery products is generally less volatile than demand for conventional seafood (CBI 2016).…”

“…There are also other ecolabels for farmed fish, for example, the Friend of the Sea and NaturLand are available for both wild and farmed seafood [57]. Economic incentives for ecolabeling include increased opportunities to enter higher-valued markets, and potentially higher ex-vessel prices [58][59][60][61].…”
