Primary Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Peripheral Lungs

Abstract: : We herein report a very rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the peripheral lungs. A 77-year-old female visited a family physician for aortitis syndrome, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. A follow-up chest computed tomography scan for aortitis syndrome revealed a nodule in the middle lobe of the right lung. Although a transbronchial lung biopsy was attempted, a definitive diagnosis could not be made. Because the possibility of lung malignancy could not be ruled out, thoracoscopic wedge resection of t… Show more

“…Tracheal ACC is a rare low‐grade malignant neoplasm and primarily occurs in the trachea and bronchi, originating from ducts in the mucous glands. Tracheal ACC accounts for 0.04–0.2% of lung cancer cases and is distributed equally between genders . The age of onset ranges from 40 to 59 years; our patient was 59.…”

“…Peripheral lung ACC may arise from subsegmental bronchi, where the glandular distribution is more sparse. The incidence of ACC from the peripheral lung is relatively low and may be closely related to the distribution of glandular cells 7,8 . Although TACC and LACC have similar histological features, they differ in incidence, clinical features, prognosis, and treatment, and should be treated differently.…”

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically and comprehensively compare different tumor location and its relationship with clinical features, treatment modality, and prognosis for patients with thoracic ACC.…”

“…However, its presence in the pulmonary system is uncommon. Most tumors occur in the trachea and mainstem bronchi, but peripheral tumors from glands of small bronchi have occasionally been reported[ 6 - 8 ]. Women are more often affected than men, and the peak age of incidence occurs between the 4th and 5th decades of life, which is earlier than lung cancer[ 9 , 10 ].…”
