Primary Adenomyoepithelioma of the Sellar Region

Abstract: Small nests of an ectopic salivary gland tissue are clinically insignificant and they are an incidental finding at microscopic examination in various organs at autopsy. Intracranially, they are suggested to be the origin of extremely rare sellar tumors that bear a marked resemblance to tumors of the salivary gland. We report a case of 38-year-old man who presented with a sellar mass and partial visual loss. The tumor was surgically removed and microscopic examination showed a lesion consistent with adenomyoepi… Show more

“…They present with signs and symptoms of mass effect. Previous reports documented various histotypes including pleomorphic adenoma, low‐grade adenocarcinoma, low‐grade acinic cell carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, myoepithelioma and adenomyoepithelioma . Similar to our patient, a conclusive diagnosis could only be reached after excluding an extra‐sellar tumor origin.…”

“…AME is commonly documented in the breast literature. On the other hand, extramammary AME is extremely uncommon and has been rarely reported in the tonsil, 11 sellar region, 12 and skin. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Including the current case report, a total of 8 examples of primary cutaneous AME have been recorded to date in the English literature (Table 1).…”

“…However, midline ectopic salivary gland rests are extremely rare. Small salivary gland-type rests are reported in association with the pituitary gland and may rarely give rise to salivary tumors in the sella turcica or skull base [7,8]. Although no ectopic salivary tissue, normal or neoplastic, has been reported in the midline of the neck including the isthmus, we propose that seromucinous salivary-type glandular tissue may have migrated from the foramen cecum in the primitive oral cavity with the median anlage to the isthmus and may have given rise to the isthmic PA in this patient.…”
