Primary Adult T-Cell Lymphoma of the Breast

Abstract: A case of primary adult T-cell lymphoma (ATL) of the breast is described. A 69-year-old woman presented with a painless, rapidly growing lump in her left breast. Staging procedures demonstrated no sign of generalized disease. Following a Patey’s mastectomy, 10 courses of adjuvant chemotherapy (CHOP) were successfully administered. “…The majority of breast NHLs are of B-cell phenotype, with the frequency of T-cell NHLs ranging from 2.5-7.5% [11][12][13][14]. Several types of T-cell NHL have been reported in the breast, including anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (NOS), adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATLL), and NK/ T-cell lymphoma [15,16].…”

“…ATLL cases with breast lesions at diagnosis are very rare and have only been sporadically reported as isolated cases. We found only four cases reported between 1990 and 2018 ( Table 2) (11)(12)(13)(14). According to these previous reports, the first clinical presentation of breast ATLL lesions is a painless palpable mass.…”

“…T-cell lymphomas of the breast are very rare. 1,9 The most frequent T-cell lymphomas involving the breast include lymphoblastic lymphoma, 1,8,26 ALCL, 9,12,13 peripheral T-cell lymphoma, 9,12,25 ATLL, 11 and mycosis fungoides. 14 Most of the cases in these series were SBLs.…”

“…6 Most of the cases of lymphomas reported in PBL and SBL are B-cell lymphomas, 1,4,5,7,8 with few reports of T-cell lymphomas arising from or secondarily involving the breast. [9][10][11][12][13][14] The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical-pathological features of a large series of breast lymphomas occurring in a population of Brazilian patients using the criteria of WHO Classification for hematolymphoid neoplasms. 15…”
