Primary Angiosarcoma of the Spleen

Abstract: The CT and MR findings in 2 patients with surgically proven splenic angiosarcoma are presented. Two distinctive radiologic and pathologic patterns were observed: total tumor replacement of the spleen with preservation of normal contour or multiple nodular masses in the spleen. The various findings on CT and MR imaging reflected the hemorrhagic nature of the lesions with increased iron content. MR imaging appeared to be superior to CT in demonstrating these features. In the case of focal lesions, radiologic dif… Show more

“…Other primary nonlymphoid malignant splenic tumors are extremely rare (Table 2). Hemangiosarcomas are highly aggressive neoplasms and the prognosis is poor [80]. Hemangiosarcomas are known to exhibit a high rate of bleeding and spontaneous rupture of the spleen [74,80].…”

“…Hemangiosarcomas are highly aggressive neoplasms and the prognosis is poor [80]. Hemangiosarcomas are known to exhibit a high rate of bleeding and spontaneous rupture of the spleen [74,80]. Computed tomography may demonstrate a diffuse, poorly defined focal mass of heterogeneous or low attenuation in an enlarged spleen with occasional intratumoural necrosis and subcapsular or extracapsular blood collections [74,81].…”
