Primary Burkitt Lymphoma of the Chest Wall

Abstract: Burkitt lymphoma (BL) originating in the skin and soft tissue at any site is exceedingly rare. This paper is about a case of primary sporadic BL that presented as an isolated, rapidly enlarging chest wall mass arising from skin and/or soft tissue in an adult. As with other BL presentations, this patient was treated with aggressive chemotherapy with central nervous system (CNS) chemoprophylaxis, but he later died because of sepsis.

“…Mediastinal or hilar lymphadenopathy are also seen [28, 32]. Uncommon intrathoracic manifestations of BL include pericardial and myocardial involvement, presenting with single or multiple masses, lung parenchymal and endobronchial lesions, and chest wall masses [3335] (Fig. 9).…”

“…Review of literature corresponding to our 15‐year study period (2000‐2015) revealed 20 reports based either on cases series or isolated cases (Table ) in which 26 histologically confirmed chest wall lymphoma cases were described . Location of the swellings was the anterior chest wall/manubrium in 14 cases, left chest wall (four cases), right chest wall (three cases), lateral chest wall (NOS in two cases), back in one case and rib/chest wall swellings and NOS in two cases.…”

“…Other lymphoma subtypes such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, large anaplastic cell, panniculitis‐like T‐cell lymphoma and Burkitt lymphoma have been reported much less frequently among chest wall swellings. The frequency of lymphomas other than DLBCL from the literature review were as follows: Hodgkin's lymphoma (six cases), Burkitt lymphoma (two cases), ALCL (two cases), and marginal zone B‐cell lymphoma, B‐cell lymphoma (NOS), subcutaneous panniculitis‐like T‐cell lymphoma (SCPTCL), diffuse medium‐size B‐cell lymphoma and null cell NHL in one case each.…”

“…This refinements in staging/response in treatment of children with BL have brought a lot of improvement in treatment seen over the years. 13 The earliest staging system of Ziegler and Magreth of 1974 is still been used but that of Murphy in 1980 which was used in children with NHL. This refinement includes extra-nodal sites as skin and bone has included recent technologies {functional imaging (Positron emission tomography (PET)} and minimal residual disease (MRD) technology as this need to be considered.…”
