Primary cardiac angiosarcoma: A case report

Abstract: Cardiac angiosarcomas are the most common primary malignant cardiac tumors in adults. The diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific clinical symptoms at presentation. The cornerstones of diagnosis are echocardiography and the histological evaluation of the cardiac biopsy. The knowledge on the treatment is limited; the outcomes of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, complete surgical removal, and heart transplantation are controversial. We report a 38-year-old woman with a primary heart tumor which infiltrated the … Show more

“…Angiosarcoma is the most common histologic subtype in primary cardiac malignant tumor among adults 1,2 , which usually occurs in men aged under 65 years, with a male to female ratio of around 2-3:1 4,6 . The most vulnerable site is in the right atrium, for 74% of primary cardiac angiosarcoma occur in the right atrium and often interfere with adjacent structures 2 .…”

“…Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare tumor, but it is the most common histologic subtype in primary cardiac malignant tumor in adults 1,2 . Although advanced technologies have been applied to diagnose heart tumors, such as tumor markers, echocardiography, computer tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography/computer tomography (PET/CT), cardiac tumor are still easily misdiagnosed as other diseases at the onset of disease.…”

“…Males are two to three times more affected than females, and most patients are young. The main site is in the right atrium (70%-90%) and the tumor can invade the vena cava and tricuspid valve, resulting in congestive heart failure, PE, and cardiac tamponade 10 - 12…”
