Objective: Primary breast sarcoma is a kind of extremely rare disease. Malignant phyllodes tumor represents a specific subset of breast soft tissue tumors. So till now, the classification and clinical management of primary breast sarcoma and malignant phyllodes tumor are controversial. The aim of this study is to explore the differences in clinical features, treatment, disease-free survival and overall survival between primary breast sarcoma and malignant phyllodes tumor group. Methods: A retrospective review of 35 cases with primary breast sarcoma and 70 cases with malignant phyllodes tumor registered from 1995 to 2010 was carried out in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital. Prognosis in terms of disease-free survival and overall survival was evaluated. Results: In primary breast sarcoma group, the result of univariate analysis demonstrated that surgical type, histopathological nodal status and local recurrence were significantly correlated with disease-free survival and overall survival. While, the result of monofactorial analysis showed the tumor size was significant prognostic indicator of disease-free survival and overall survival in malignant phyllodes tumor group. The Kaplan-Meier curves for 5-year disease-free survival rates and overall survival rates demonstrated that no significant difference was found between the primary breast sarcoma and malignant phyllodes tumor group (P = 0.702 and 0.772, respectively). Conclusions: The primary breast sarcoma patients had identical disease-free survival and overall survival compared with the malignant phyllodes tumor patients, which indicated that primary breast sarcoma and malignant phyllodes tumor patients should be treated with the same strategies. Surgical management is important for both the primary breast sarcoma and malignant phyllodes tumor patients. The role of the adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy remains uncertain.

BackgroundsOsteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma are malignant tumors with poor prognosis. Peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) is considered to prevent tumors in many malignances. However, few studies have focused on the functions of PRDX1 in osteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma.Material/MethodsPRDX1 mRNA in tumors and adjacent tissues of 32 osteosarcoma patients and 16 fibrosarcoma patients was extracted and measured. Proliferation and invasion of MG63 and HT1080 cell lines after silencing or overexpressing PRDX1 were used to detect the role of PRDX1 in metastasis of osteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma.ResultsPRDX1 mRNA level was lower in tumor tissues than in adjacent tissues of osteosarcoma (F=50.105) and fibrosarcoma (F=28.472) patients, both significantly (P<0.05). Silencing PRDX1 promoted proliferation of MG63 and HT1080 cells, while overexpressing PRDX1 suppressed proliferation after 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, compared to the control group, both significantly (P<0.05). Silencing PRDX1 increased invasive cells of MG63 (F=246.218) and HT1080 (F=245.602), while overexpressing PRDX1 decreased invasive cells of both, compared to the control, and the difference was significant (P<0.05).ConclusionsPRDX1 expression is low in osteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma tumors. PRDX1 suppressed the progression and metastasis of osteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma cells.

Male breast cancer: a budding and unaddressed issue

Incidence of male breast carcinoma (MBC), although rare, recently has an increasing trend. The increase in incidence is associated with increasing age, and poor clinical outcome seen with MBC is mostly because of illiteracy and lack of health education and shyness in reporting to the clinical physician. In this context, a comprehensive review regarding this forth bursting clinical scenario is important. The present article focus on that aspect encompassing but not limited to different clinical studies. The randomized trials on MBC are sparse and most of the studies are retrospective in nature due to rarity of cases. MBC treatment line is derived from female breast cancer guidelines. MBC has a poorer prognosis than female breast cancer. MBC patients in India present in advanced stage and surgery remains challenging due to paucity of breast tissue. Post mastectomy radiation is indicated on the same lines as of female breast cancer and it decreases locoregional recurrence. Adjuvant hormonal therapy decreases recurrence and improves survival. Further clinical trials are required including large number of patients to study different parameters in respect of prognosis and survival.
