Primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the liver: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: BackgroundRecently, gastrointestinal stromal tumors that have developed outside of the digestive tract have been reported. These tumors are collectively termed extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors can also develop in the liver. Only eight case reports involving primary GIST of the liver have been published. We report a case and review the literature regarding this disease.Case presentationA 70-year-old woman with a past history of gastric cancer visited our hospital for … Show more

“…Although several GISTs arising from outside of the gastrointestinal tract have been reported [4, 5, 6], they represent only 1% of all GISTs of defined origin [12]. Concerning the hepatobiliary system, only 9 cases including the clinicopathological features and the treatment outcomes of primary hepatic GISTs have been reported [9]. Eight of 9 cases were resected, and the other case underwent radiofrequency ablation [9].…”

“…Because PET-CT has essential value in diagnosis and staging, prediction of malignant potential, treatment decision, efficacy assessment, and follow-up monitoring, it has been clinically recognized and included in the 2010 National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guide Guidelines Medium[ 6 ]. In the literature, PET-CT was used to exclude liver GIST from extrahepatic lesions with a maximum standardized uptake value of 6.30-6.85[ 28 , 32 ]. Importantly, even if patients have a characteristic image without a history of hepatitis and alpha-fetoprotein levels are not elevated, the possibility of PHGIST should be considered in the differential diagnosis.…”
