“…Overall, the results support the published literature (Brobeck et al, 2011;Bartholomew et al, 2007;Bjerregaard et al, 2011;Rubak et al, 2006) that by employing key elements in MI (Rollnick et al, 2008), all HCPs expanded their consciousness by being aware of how practices such as asking permission to interrupt a conversation created trust and facilitated openness for pregnant women to change. This study shows that implementing MI when managing obese pregnant women can be achieved though it creates demands for the HCPs involved.…”

“…Shorter hospital stays and better communication between HCPs and their patients require a clear and understandable approach (Nørgaard and Andreasen, 2012) The majority of training courses in MI last one to three days and are conducted in workshop formats (Rubak et al, 2006;Lindhardt et al, 2014;Brobeck et al, 2011). These workshops involve an introduction to the MI philosophy, the principles of MI, a demonstration of the methodology and a guided practice in mastering the MI technique (Soderlund and Nilsen, 2009;Lindhardt et al, 2014).…”

“…It has also been used in addressing a range of other behaviour changes such as smoking cessation (Emmons and Rollnick, 2001), diabetes (Treasure, 2004) and eating disorders (Treasure and Schmidt 2004). More recently MI has been implemented by healthcare nurses primarily as a method for health promotion practice (Brobeck et al 2011), with Thompson et al (2011) concluding MI is effective in changing behaviour in cardiovascular health. Also, in the education of healthcare professionals, MI has been applied to devise a self-administered instrument, called the SAMI (Self-Administered Motivational Instrument) that students can use to review and, where necessary or possible, make amendments to their approaches to higher education (HE) study (Duffy and Rimmer, 2008).…”
