Primary hydatidosis of distal femur masquerading malignancy −A rare case

Abstract: Hydatidosis is relatively uncommon entity and it rarely affects bone and joints. A rare case of primary hydatidosis (Echhinococcus granulosus infection) involving the distal femur and the knee joint in a 53 years old female is reported here. This presented as a pathological supracondylar fracture of femur. On establishment of a clinical diagnosis she was treated preoperatively with Albendazole 600 mg, daily for 3 cycles each of 21 days with a gap of 1 weeks between cycles. Two stage surgery was carried out, th… Show more

“…Calcifications and cysts can be found on imaging after adjacent tissues are invaded ( Rangheard et al, 2001 ). In long-bone CE, the primary cyst begins in the epiphysis ( Dathik et al, 2019 ). The lesion, which can be either monocystic or polycystic, is mostly located in the metaphysis and can expand into the diaphysis and form a fan-shaped cortex; however, dilatation, sclerosis, and periosteal reaction seldom occur.…”

“…Improved after 6 months Lumbar vertebra and sacral vertebra (Majmundar et al, 2019;Sharma et al, 2020;Trifa and Maamri, 2021) Debridement Femoral bone (Gautam et al, 2018;Salman et al, 2018;Dathik et al, 2019;Fröschen et al, 2019;Masmoudi et al, 2019;Ramteke et al, 2019;Oueslati et al, 2020;Ahmady-Nezhad et al, 2022) Resection of the lesion; fixation; resection of the lesion; mobility aid (Daniel et al, 2017). As can be seen, the outcome of pelvic-joint infection is very serious.…”

“…Total femoral resection is rarely indicated. Partial femoral resection with appropriate proximal or distal femoral replacement megaprostheses is a reasonable approach for initial procedure failure or more extensive osseous disease not involving the entire femur 5,22-25 (Table II). In previous reports, partial femoral resection/reconstruction with megaprostheses led to excellent disease control; disease recurrence in retained bone remains a concern 7 .…”
