Primary Hyperparathyroidism: Is There an Increased Prevalence of Renal Stone Disease?

Abstract: Our results showed a fourfold increased prevalence of asymptomatic renal stone disease in patients with surgically proven primary hyperparathyroidism compared with subjects not affected by the disorder. The National Institutes of Health consensus conference on asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism recommended that patients with renal stone disease undergo parathyroid surgery. These patients should undergo surgery even if they have minimal or no elevation of the total serum calcium value and no other metabol… Show more

“…They excluded patients with moderate-severe diarrhoea syndrome and impaired renal function. Our findings are also in contrast to the prevalence of 7% found by routine renal sonography by Suh et al (18). They retrospectively investigated 271 with surgically proven parathyroid adenomas.…”

“…It also points to the importance of including previous stones in the evaluation of risk of stones in PHPT. Our prevalence of renal calcification was higher than the prevalence reported based on sonography (18). This may suggest that a CT scan in a cross-sectional setting is more sensitive than sonography in the diagnosis of nephrocalcinosis and should be used for the routine examination of the patients.…”

“…Почечная недостаточность является одним из наи-более тяжелых и малообратимых осложнений и связана с более выраженными клиническими проявлениями, повышением риска смерти, увеличением распростра-ненности артериальной гипертензии [22][23][24][25]. По дан-ным Tassone F. и соавт., снижение СКФ до ХБП 3-й стадии диагностируется у 17% из 294 пациентов с ПГПТ, при этом почти половина из них имеют мяг-кую форму заболевания [26].…”
