Primary intraosseous carcinoma arising in dentigerous cyst: Case report

Abstract: Highlights Primary intraosseous carcinoma arising in a dentigerous cyst is a rare observation. There are no clinical or radiological pathognomonic characteristics and the diagnosis is often made fortuitously. A surgical excision with clear margin is the cornerstone of treatment. A systematic and careful microscopic analysis of any cyst, even if look like benign, should be undertaken.

“…As of 2001, the 5-year survival rate of reported cases was 52%. 10 Cases arising in cysts often appear to be better differentiated and have a more prolonged course, but the 5-year survival rate of reported cases is slightly lower, at 40%. When cysts are found to harbour incidental dysplasia or carcinoma in situ after enucleation, conservative close follow-up is appropriate.…”

“…According to the definition established by the World Health Organization, a dentigerous cyst (DC), formerly known as a follicular cyst, is a pathology embracing the crown of an unerupted tooth that attaches to its cementoenamel junction [ 1 , 2 ]. Such cysts sometimes transform into neoplastic compositions, which has been presented in several case reports [ 3 , 4 ]. DCs are the second most common bone cyst and affect 0.91–7.3% of the population [ 5 , 6 ].…”
