Primary localized histiocytic sarcoma of the lumbar vertebrae in a four-toed hedgehog (<i>Atelerix albiventris</i>)

Abstract: We describe a case of primary localized histiocytic sarcoma of the lumbar vertebrae in a four-toed hedgehog. The case showed aggressive osteolysis of lumbar vertebrae on radiography, and a soft-tissue mass effacing this region was noted, suggesting a neoplastic lesion. No metastatic lesions were apparent. Antemortem diagnosis was challenging, and necropsy was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings were consistent with localized histiocytic sarcoma. This report provides documentation of t… Show more

“…8 Seminal vesicle and prostate 'hypertrophy' (unconfirmed histologically) are mentioned as secondary findings in a report of vertebral histiocytic sarcoma in a 5.9-year-old male hedgehog. 13 A recent report delineated urinary outflow obstruction secondary to enlarged seminal vesicles (secondary to glandular hyperplasia) and prostate glands (undefined histopathologic aetiology), illustrating a clinical obstructive effect to a luminal structure in the caudal peritoneum secondary to accessory sex gland enlargement. 14 This report describes similar benign hyperplastic change of the seminal vesicles in an individual adult male of this species with presumptive obstructive effect of the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…In a retrospective report on histopathological diagnoses from 100 privately owned African hedgehog samples, there is one instance of seminal vesicle hyperplasia, but no further commentary on the submission 8 .
