Primary Malignant Lymphoma of the Urinary Bladder A Case Report

Abstract: A patient with primary malignant lymphoma of the urinary bladder is presented. Grossly, the bladder showed multiple submucosal masses. Histologically and immunohisto‐chemically, diffuse B‐cell lymphoma of the medium‐sized cell type was revealed. On the basis of clinicopathological features, the present case resembled previously recorded cases of bladder lymphoma. “…The concept of MALT lymphoma was proposed by Isaacson and Wright in 1983, 6 and the first report of a case arising in the bladder was in 1990 7 ; however, the similarity of some bladder lymphomas to lymphoid lesions in the stomach had been noted even before MALT lymphoma was described. 8 Since 1990, 14 other cases of primary MALT-type lymphoma of the bladder have been published.…”

“…The incidence of secondary involvement of the urinary bladder in lymphoma is about 13% 7) . However, primary involvement presents 0.2% of all urinary bladder lymphomas 2) . Because of its rarity, limited clinicopathologic data are available and result from singlecase observations or small series.…”

“…After more than 20 years of clinical research, MALT lymphomas are now recognized as a distinct subtype of nonHodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). MALT lymphoma of the urinary bladder was first described in 1990 2) . Management has been guided by retrospective clinical studies because primary lymphoma of the urinary bladder is rare.…”
