Primary Malignant Melanoma of the Vagina: A Retrospective Clinicopathologic Study of 44 Cases

Abstract: The prognosis of primary vaginal melanoma is dependent on the DOI and lymph node status in our study. Surgical resection of disease, especially wide local excision, should be considered as the optimal treatment when complete removal of tumor with a negative margin is possible. Adjuvant therapy may be associated with a longer PFS.

“…10 In fact, despite the high number of sporadic cases, only limited series are reported in literature. [11][12][13] Recently, Xia et al, 14 analyzing a series of 44 patients affected by vaginal melanoma, suggested that depth of invasion and lymphatic spread are the 2 main variables influencing survival. Moreover, the authors reported that administration of an adjuvant treatment correlated with an improved disease-free survival (DFS).…”

“…Moreover, the authors reported that administration of an adjuvant treatment correlated with an improved disease-free survival (DFS). 14 However, data on the efficacy of adjuvant treatments are controversial. In a study on 201 patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result, Kirschner et al 5 observed that administration of an adjuvant treatment (specifically radiation) did not improve patients' outcomes.…”

“…Vaginal melanoma can occur in any part of the vagina, with the majority in the lower one third (54.6%) of the vagina, and most tumors are located in the anterior (38.6%) and side walls (45.4%) [11]. The most common symptoms are vaginal bleeding (63.6%), followed by vaginal mass (15.9%) and vaginal discharge (15.9%) [11].…”

“…Malignant melanoma of cervix usually occurs in postmenopausal women, between 60 to 70 years of age . The overall prognosis of this highly [1] aggressive disease is very poor since it is diagnosed at an advanced stage and it spreads hematogenously at early stages .The cells arise [2] from the melanocytes in the mucosal epithelium of the urogenital system. Malignant melanoma of the cervix has very less data in literature.…”
