Primary MALT lymphoma of the kidney

Abstract: A primary mucosa associated lymphoid tissue tumor (MALT) of the kidney in a 50-year-old man who suffered from on therapy resistant high blood pressure over 15 years period is presented. A mass in the right kidney (6x5x3 cm) during routine check up was discovered on ultrasonography and confirmed on CT scan and NMR. The patient was submitted to nephrectomy. A mass involving kidney, pyelon and upper part of the ureter was found. Histology showed low grade non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma of MALT type. The neoplastic c… Show more

“…Most are aggressive lymphomas (large B-cell, Burkitt, lymphoblastic B or T precursor cell lymphomas) and only a few small B-cell lymphomas have been reported, including plasmacytoma [1-3, 9, 11]. A few renal MZL of the MALT type have been reported, often apparently primary [12][13][14][15][16]. It is well known that MALT lymphoma may involve multiple sites, but, as far as we know, secondary splenic involvement has not been reported in primary renal MZL of the MALT type.…”

“…Table 1 summarized cases of localized renal MALT lymphoma reported in the literature. The initial example of primary localized renal MALT lymphoma was described by Colovic et al [2]. The patient was disease free after radical nephrectomy without additional treatment.…”

“…Although renal involvement in any type of lymphoma is common, lymphomas of MALT arising in renal tissue is extremely rare. Only a few cases of primary renal MALT lymphoma have been reported in the literature [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. In contrast to other type of low-grade lymphoma, these tumors have a tendency to be localized at diagnosis and to be curable with local therapy [6].…”

“…It is defined as a nonHodgkin's lymphoma arising in the renal parenchyma in the absence of any extrarenal localization at the time of diagnosis or invasion from an adjacent lymphomatous mass. 1,3,4 The MALT lymphomas are in the group of marginal zone B-cell lymphomas that arise from extranodal mucosal-based proliferation of lymphoid cells. These cells have been called centrocyte-like cells or monocytoid B cells, often infiltrating normal epithelial structures with formation of so-called lymphoepithelial lesions.…”

“…3 To the best of our knowledge, only 8 cases have been published until now (Table 1). [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] We report a case of primary renal lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue in an 82-year-old woman who presented with a 5-cm solid mass in the left kidney.…”
