“…It appears that primary dural melanoma follows a less aggressive course with patients surviving longer than those with leptomeningeal melanoma. 15, 45 Kiel et al 48 reviewed leptomeningeal melanoma and showed a median postoperative survival of 1 month and an overall 2-year survival of only 15%. Patients treated surgically for primary dural melanoma and dural melanoma associated with Nevus of Ota fare somewhat better 4,10,15 : disease-free intervals range from 9 to 18 months after treatment for the former, and the median postoperative survival was 4 years for the latter.…”

“…Most of the cases of CNS melanin bearing tumours are metastatic melanomas constituting 3-16% of secondary neoplastic foci in CNS, melanotic neurocutaneous syndromes and primary leptomeningeal melanoma. [8,9] Primary melanocytic neoplasms arise from normally occurring leptomeningeal melanocytes which are derived from the neural crest during early embryonic development. [10] Normal rests of pigmented cells within the CNS include the medulla, pons, substantia nigra, locus cerulus and the leptomeninges over the convexities, basal region and upper cervical spinal cord.…”

“…With aggressive intervention, patients with primary CNS melanoma survive, on average, 5 months (metastatic CNS melanoma patients average 11.5 months with response to initial treatment [16, 31]).…”
