Primary mucinous carcinoma of eyelid: A rare clinical entity

Abstract: Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma of the eyelid, a rare pathologic entity, is an adenocarcinoma of the eccrine glands. Though it has low metastatic potential, it does have a significant recurrence rate. We present the occurrence, clinical and histological features, and management of this tumor in a 62-year-old male who presented with a recurrent, firm, nodular left lower lid lesion. He underwent excision with a 5 mm margin and the defect was repaired with a Mustarde's cheek rotation flap. A full oncological… Show more

“…These tumours are considered low-grade malignant neoplasms with an indolent course, having a tendency for local recurrence (19.6%) and metastasis (6.1%) after surgical treatment over a mean follow-up period of 37.4 months [21] , with most metastases being to the regional lymph nodes [9,10] . Distant metastases have been reported in 2–7 percent of affected patients [6] .…”

“…MEC tumors are typically avascular, which may explain the low rate of metastasis. 18 The authors speculate that the involvement of the lacrimal gland in the present case was a result of direct extension (Fig. 2) Clinically, tumors that demonstrate ulceration, tenderness, and erythema are at higher risk for metastasis.…”

“…Men are more affected than women in a 2:1 ratio. They tend to occur more frequently in elderly individuals (average age 62y, range 34-84 y) [3]. Cutaneous mucinous carcinomas may present with a variety of clinical presentations.…”
