Primary Nocturnal Enuresis and Left-handedness

Abstract: To date, no previous studies have described the association between primary nocturnal enuresis and left-handedness. In our series of enuretic patients, the prevalence of left-handedness was significantly higher than the control group. These data suggest a new correlation which needs further investigation.

“…In our series, we confirm these data: 21.9% in the group of 160 children with NE were left-handed. This association could be the symptom of an incomplete maturation of superior function with consequent maturational delay in the control of urinary continence, since left-handedness has been associated with developmental problems [21]. Some stress-related health problems, such as NE, could interfere with the normal developmental shift to right sides lateral preferences during childhood, delaying the shift and leading to a higher prevalence of left-handers in NE patients.…”

[30] Regarding the level of income of family, the less the level of income, the higher frequency of nocturnal enuresis was found. According to a study by Öge et al , a statistically significant relation was found between socioeconomic level and nocturnal enuresis.…”

“…[10] In addition, the prevalence of left-handedness was significantly higher in children with NE than in healthy children. [11] To the best of our knowledge, there have been no studies investigating the association of NE with innocent heart murmurs in the literature.…”
