Primary non-skeletal intracranial cartilaginous neoplasms: report of a chondroma and a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma

Abstract: Primary intracranial cartilaginous neoplasms which do not arise from bones of the skull are extremely rare (Alpers, 1935;Chorobski, Jarzymski, and Ferens, 1939;Dahlin and Henderson, 1962;Flyger, Freidenfeldt, and Orell, 1963;Siris and Angrist, 1942). We report herein two such tumours; one benign and the other malignant.CASE 1: CHONDROMA During the seventh month of pregnancy L.W., a 32-yearold white woman, began to exp-rience fainting spells of 15 minutes' duration followed by increasingly severe speech difficu… Show more

“…Care is necessary in distinguishing from meningiomas those intracranial cartilagenous tumors which appear to arise in the skull and secondarily involve the intracranial cavity. Chondromas, osteochondromas and chondrosarcomas have been identified as arising from the falx or from the dura of the cerebral convexity without obvious involvement of the adjacent skull (10,11). Giant cells' have been reported occasionally, especially in meningotheliomatous type.…”
