Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Abstract: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), by far the most common form of glaucoma, currently afflicts more than 2 million Americans, more than half of whom probably don't know they have it. Asymptomatic in the early stages, it gradually and progressively reduces the visual field and leads to blindness if untreated. Elevated intraocular pressure is believed to play a role, yet some people with normal pressure develop POAG. There is no single diagnostic test; screening and diagnosis involve periodic comprehensive eye … Show more

“…Glaucoma is a disease of multi-factorial origin with glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) and progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) as major characteristics [2, 3]. Among other glaucoma types primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common form with a global prevalence of 3% [4, 5]. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is known as the major risk factor and topical pressure lowering therapy is still the first-line treatment in glaucoma disease management.…”

“…Excessive rise in IOP can lead to optic nerve damage with accompanied retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss and thus glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) similar to processes in primary open‐angle glaucoma (POAG) . Among several other glaucoma types, POAG is the most common form with a prevalence of up to 4.2% depending on the world region (3% worldwide) . Silent onset and asymptomatic progression of visual field narrowing are typical properties of the disease .…”

“…Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and is characterised by visual field defects, retinal ganglion cell death, and progressive degeneration of the optic nerve 1. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the major type of primary glaucoma in most populations, and will affect 67 million individuals in the world in 2020 2.…”
