Primary Radiation Therapy for Early Breast Cancer

Abstract: Primary radiation therapy for early breast cancer is a combination of limited breast surgery for the removal of gross disease, and moderate doses of radiation for the control of residual subclinical disease. The results from retrospective studies using primary radiation therapy indicate that high levels of local tumor control with good cosmetic results can be achieved. Preliminary results from a prospective randomized clinical trial indicate that radical mastectomy and primary radiation therapy result in equiv… Show more

“…This approach has been used since the 1980s. 19 Computed tomography is currently being used, as described later, to simulate radiation therapy, thereby allowing avoidance of radiation exposure to the lung and heart, the correction of underlying lung density, and optimization of compensation. 20,21 Although early complications of breast irradiation, including skin erythema and irritation, are commonly BCT, breast-conserving therapy; XRT, X-ray therapy; Lump, lumpectomy observed, they minimally influence the patient's quality of life.…”

“…Although physicians agree on the desirability of these ends, argument over the best means to accomplish them is often heated. Reports from single institutions [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] describing the outcome of various treatment techniques have been extremely encouraging in the movement away from disfiguring surgery. From such experiences, there are strong indications that treatment programs other than radical surgery, usually radiation therapy incorporated with limited surgical procedures, may well be capable of achieving comparable cure rates.…”
