Primary Reading Epilepsy

Abstract: In six cases of reflex epilepsy, the seizures were triggered by reading or elaborating a verbal utterance, and were accompanied on EEG by focal or generalized epileptiform activity. The seizures were controlled with clonazepam in four cases and by sodium valproate in two cases. We speculate that the disturbance has a cortical origin and is triggered by neural processes involved in the elaboration of language.

“…Third, failure to recognize RE may result in unnecessary investigations and delay in initiating the appropriate treatment, since it can be successfully treated in most cases with anticonvulsants, especially valproate, clonazepam, or as was reported in the literature, with levetiracetam. “…The most common is photosensitive epilepsy, making up about 10% of all new cases of epilepsy in the age range 7 to 19 years (Quirk et al 1995). Other triggers described include reading (Saenz-Lope et al 1985, Radhakrishnan et al 1995, numeric calculations (Goossens et al 1990, Espadaler Medina et al 1992, hot baths, and eating (Ahuja et al 1988, Koul et al 1989, Senanayake 1990.…”
