Primary Signet Ring Cell Adenocarcinoma of the Urinary Bladder: A Report of 2 Cases

Abstract: Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is a rare and aggressive histologic subtype of adenocarcinoma. In general, this tumor occurs in the middle age, and clinical presentation does not differ from transitional cell carcinomas. The prognosis is often poor, given the advanced stage at diagnosis. To our knowledge, <100 cases of signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder have been reported. We report 2 cases with bladder linitis plastica primitive, and we draw attention to its patho… Show more

“…Furthermore, the histological appearance of primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is the same as that of other sites. Thus, evaluation of other primary sites is mandatory in view of excluding a metastasis [ 13 ]. In a female patient, possible primary tumours include tumours from colon, breast, and genital system that should be considered as differential diagnosis [ 10 ].…”

“…On the other hand, squamous cell carcinoma contributes to 80%, transitional cell carcinoma to 10% and adenocarcinoma to 10% of UC in the bulbo-membranous urethra [2]. Adenocarcinoma of the urethra arises from the periurethral glands and can be of the following subtypes-enteric, not otherwise specified, mucinous, clear cell and signet ring cell [3].Primary signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of the urinary tract is extremely rare, with only a handful of cases involving the bladder and upper tracts and female urethra [4][5][6][7]. Our case is the first report of signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of the male urethra in the English literature.…”

“…Linitis plastica has been reported in signetring cell adenocarcinoma of the GI tract and bladder. 1,2 It was first coined in 1854 by William Brinton to describe the leather bottle shape of the stomach. 3 Over time, the term linitis plastica has been extended to include macroscopic thickening and reduced elasticity of any hollow organ.…”
