Primary structure of Escherichia coli ribosomal protein S1 and of its gene rpsA.

Abstract: The primary structure of protein SI, the largest protein component of the Escherichia coli ribosome, has been elucidated by determining the amino acid sequence of the protein (from E. coli MRE600) and the nucleotide sequence of the SI gene (rpsA, of a K-12 strain). The two methods gave results in perfect agreement except at two positions where possible strain-specific differences were found. Protein S1 (MRE600) is composed of 557 amino acid residues (no modified amino acids were detected) and has Mr 61,159. Th… Show more

“…Simultaneously with the amino acid sequence determination of protein S1, the nucleotide sequence of the S1 gene (~p,rA) from E. coli 56.5 (a K12 strain) has been determined [37]. With the exception of two places, the deduced amino acid sequence of E. coli J6.5 protein S1 is in perrect agreement with the amino sequence given in Fig.7.…”

“…In this paper we give a full description of the determination of the primary structure of S1 and report computer-assisted predictions of its secondary structure and features of its functional domains apparent from the data. A ,hart communication based on this work (and on tlie nucleotide Jequence of tlie S1 gene) has recently been published [37].…”

“…It has been reported that r-proteins S1 of several species have repeating amino acid residues in the central core and carboxyl terminal regions as mRNA-binding sites [13][14][15][16]. Also, it is well known that the mRNA binding to r-protein S1 in prokaryotes is the translation initiation reaction [3].…”
